Culture & City
Cape Town rewards the people who go looking. We take you off the postcard route — into the Bo-Kaap kitchens, the galleries, the old streets and the tables worth booking — with locals who tell it straight. You leave knowing the city, not just having seen it.
Bo-Kaap cooking class & its stories
The painted houses are the photograph everyone takes and the least interesting thing about the neighbourhood. This is the oldest surviving residential area in Cape Town, settled by people brought here from Southeast Asia, and the community that lives there now is descended from them. We go in with someone from the area, eat in a family kitchen, and talk about what the colour actually signified.

The galleries
Zeitz MOCAA sits in a grain silo on the waterfront and is the obvious start, but the galleries that feed it are the better half of the day.

The old town on foot
Four hundred years inside a square kilometre. The Castle, the Company’s Garden, the Slave Lodge, Greenmarket Square and the streets between them. It is the part of Cape Town people walk past on the way somewhere else, and the part that explains why the rest of the city is shaped the way it is.

Where the city eats
Bree Street, Kloof Street, the harbour, and the places that opened last year. Long lunches at tables we can actually get, with the people who cook there stopping by when it is quiet enough. We build it around what cuisine you are after.
