Food & Wine
Some of the oldest wine in the New World grows twenty minutes from the city, and some of the best tables do not take walk-ins. We open the doors — the estates, the chefs, the market stalls we buy from — and then we get out of the way and let you linger.
A private Winelands day
Two estates rather than five, chosen for what you actually drink rather than what the tour buses stop at. One name you will recognise and one small grower you will not, which is usually the one people ask about afterwards. A long lunch in between. We leave late and come home in the light, and if the day is going well we would rather add a pass on the way back than a third tasting.

Constantia’s old vines
Wine has been made in Constantia since the 1680s, which makes it the oldest wine region in the New World, and it is twenty minutes from the sea. The valley is cool, green and shaded by oaks, and it is where Cape Town goes when it does not want to drive to Stellenbosch. A half day is enough. Two estates, one lunch, and back in the city by mid-afternoon.

A chef’s table, just for you
A kitchen opened for your party alone, with the chef cooking in front of you and explaining what is on each plate and why. It works best for four to eight people; more than that and it stops being a conversation. We arrange it around what is in season rather than a set menu, which means we need a little notice and it is worth it.

Slow market mornings
Oranjezicht on a Saturday for what is growing, or the harbour when the boats are in for what was swimming that morning. Coffee, oysters, bread still warm, and a basket of things you will eat that afternoon. It is the least ambitious morning we run and one people mention most, probably because it is the closest thing to how we actually spend a Saturday.

Fly in to lunch in the Winelands.
Twenty minutes over the mountains instead of an hour and a half around them. Lift off the Waterfront, cross the Hottentots Holland with Table Bay behind you, and land at an estate in time for a long lunch. Then back by road through the passes with the afternoon light on the mountains.
