Cape Town
The city is the easy part. Cape Town is small and stacked — the mountain right above the sea, the sea ten minutes from the old town, and the whole thing fits into a day without anyone being rushed through it.
Our base sits on the Sea Point Promenade, so a sunrise walk and a mid-morning paddle can be the same morning.
Our HQ is on the beachfront, on the Promenade — a stretch of lawn and paving that runs for kilometres along the Atlantic and is where the whole city walks in the morning. Boats go in from here, bikes go out from here, and nobody has to drive anywhere first.
A sunrise walk up Lion’s Head, or Platteklip straight up the front of Table Mountain for anyone who wants the effort. If the legs are not in it, the cable car takes you to the same summit in five minutes. All of it is close enough to be done before breakfast.
South from the Promenade the road runs under the Twelve Apostles to Clifton and Camps Bay. Cold water, white sand, and the best sunsets in the city. Turn the other way and you are in the Bo-Kaap and the old town within minutes, where the history, the galleries and the eating are.

When should I come?
November to March is hot and clear, with the south-easter blowing through the afternoons — mornings are the answer. April and May are still and warm and the quietest the city gets. June to August is green and dramatic, with the best light of the year.
Short version
Hot and clear: Nov–Mar · Stillest: Apr–May · Best light: Jun–Aug · Mornings beat afternoons in summer
What would you skip?
Not the cable car — the queue for it. Go up on the first car of the morning, or walk. And not the waterfront at lunchtime; the eating that is worth your time is in the old town and the suburbs around it. Signal Hill at sunset on a Saturday, when half the city has had the same idea and you spend it looking at parked cars. And trying to fit the mountain and the Peninsula into one day — they are both full days, and doing them together gives you neither.
Instead
First cable car of the day, or walk · The old town over the waterfront · One thing properly, not two badly
How far is it, and how long do I need?
You are already in it. The mountain sits twenty minutes from the sea and the sea ten minutes from the old town, so the whole city fits into a day without anyone being rushed through it. Most days start at our base on the Sea Point Promenade.
