West Coast
The West Coast is flat, bright and empty, and it does not look like the rest of the Cape. Langebaan sits on a lagoon that runs turquoise over white sand, warm enough to swim in and shallow enough to walk a long way out into. Behind it the West Coast National Park holds fynbos, tortoises and a Postberg section that opens to the public for two months of the year and not a day more. North of that the road runs through fishing villages to Paternoster, where the houses are whitewashed against the light and lunch is crayfish on the sand.
A day here
Up the R27 early, an hour and a half with the sea on your left the whole way. Into the park while it is cool — the lagoon lookouts, the fynbos, and in August and September the Postberg flowers, which only open properly in the middle of the day when the sun is on them. Lunch at Paternoster, on the beach. Back down the coast in the late light, or later than that if the flowers took longer than planned, which they usually do.

Experiences here
The lagoon and the coast sit under Ocean & Coast. The flowers, the fynbos and the tortoises belong with Wildlife & Wild Places, and Paternoster is Food & Wine territory as much as anywhere inland.

When should I come?
August and September for the flowers. The Postberg section opens on 1 August and closes on 30 September, nine to five, and that is the only window there is. The rest of the year the park is open and almost empty. Summer is hot, bright and windy — the south-easter blows hard up here, which is exactly why the kitesurfers come to Langebaan. Winter is green, cool and quiet.
Short version
Flowers: Aug–Sep · Postberg: 1 Aug–30 Sep, 9–5 · Windiest: Nov–Feb · Quietest: May–Aug
What would you skip?
Going for the flowers on a grey day. They open with the sun and stay shut without it, so an overcast morning at Postberg is a long drive to look at a green field. And rushing through the park to make a lunch booking — the lagoon lookouts are the reason to be there in the first place.
Instead
Sunny days, late morning · The lagoon before the village · Paternoster for lunch, not breakfast
How far is it, and how long do I need?
An hour and a half up the R27 from the city, flat road with the sea alongside most of it. A full day covers the park and Paternoster without rushing. In flower season it is worth leaving early, because Postberg fills by mid-morning and the road in is single file.
Practical
